Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church 50-Year History
In 2023, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary. For the past 49 years, OGMBC has had four pastors (current pastor is Dr. Roger Dorsey) and met in three different locations (with the longest tenure being at its current location on Baumhart Road). The following is a brief history of key building, leadership, missions, and miscellaneous milestones in the church:
1973
September 15: OGMBC is established/organized. Elected Officers included:
- Pastor – Harold Taylor
- Clerk – Alonzo Neely;
- Treasurer – John Slagle Jr.
- Trustees: Ernest Miller, Raymond Carender, and John Slagle Jr.
Initial members:
- By Letter – Alonzo Neely, Harold Dalton, Joyce Dalton, Shirley Slagle, Judy Slagle, and Ronnie
Slagle. - By Statement of Faith – Obbie Jones, Patricia Jones, Darla Jones, Raymond Carender, Mable
Carender, Jesse Tindale, Erenest Miller, Pastor Frank Manning, Dixie Manning, Jenny Manning,
Pastor Mandell Smith, Emma Smith, Danny Smith, and John Slagle Jr.
Initial meeting place is 4905 Fleming Avenue, Lorain Ohio.
1974
June 15: Discussion held to place a bid to purchase the Swiss Hall (445 West Main Street, South
Amherst) for $13,500.
September 23: Vote approved to purchase the Swiss Hall on land contract for $13,500 (monthly
payment of $126 per month).
1976
June 5: Church voted to adopt the Pendleton Manual.
August 15: Annual homecoming service held which included a mortgage burning ceremony.
October 23: Special business meeting held to discuss purchase of property at 9457 Baumhart Road for
the sum of $20,000 and discuss permits needed to construct a church on said property.
1983
June 29: Church approves construction of a Shelter House (approximate size to be 32 feet by 64 feet).
1991
September 28: Special business meeting called to authorize the trustees to borrow money from the
Lorain County Savings Bank to cover the costs to have the church parking lot paved.
2001
June 2: Church votes to name the Shelter House as the “Dewey Jones Memorial Fellowship Hall.”
2006
September 23: Pastor Harold Taylor submits resignation as pastor.
2007
April: Special business meeting held for the purpose of electing Bro. Earl Conner as the OGMBC pastor.
September 16: Church accepts Pastor Solomon Ambrocio (Phillipines) as it’s first missionary.
2008
May 11: Church approves engraving a large sandstone wheel to be placed in front of the church honoring the founding pastor Harold Taylor.
July 20: Pastor Bill Lyons (missionary to Japan) added as an OGMBC Missionary.
November 6: Church accepts the resignation of Pastor Earl Connor as pastor.
2011
October 15: Pastor Scott Mitchell elected to serve as OGMBC’s pastor.
2014
Constitution updated to change “closed communion” to “close communion.”
2018
September 16: Pastor Scott Mitchell submits resignation as pastor (effective October 31st).
2019
September: OGMBC joins Faith Baptist Church and Eversprings Missionary Baptist Church to host first annual missions sing to benefit building projects for several missionaries.
2020
October 3: Dr. Roger Dorsey elected to serve as OGMBC’s fourth pastor. NOTE: during the 2-year interim several pastors assisted OGMBC provide weekly sermons.
2021
Church begins posting sermons on social media.
October 3: At the annual business meeting – added several missionaries: Pastor Eric Balajadia (GSBC – Philippines), Pastor Robert Mercado Balajadia (GSBC – Philippines), Life a DEMENTIA Foundation, and Lighthouse Children’s Home.
2022
July: Construction completed on a missions apartment used to house missionaries who are visiting and/or passing through the area.
August 7: Added a new missionary for annual support – “Ain’t God Good Ministries (India)” – Pastor Danny and Denise Tesseneer.
November 20: Added a four missionaries for annual support – Pastor Darren Barnett, Sixth Day Outdoor Ministry (Diamond, Ohio); Pastor Mike Drust, Missionaries to Albania & regions beyond; Pastor Daniel Trantham, Pine Ridge Baptist Church (Pine Ride Indian Reservation, South Dakota); and Sam Ward, Missionary to Croatia.
